 Who Are School Social Workers? 

 

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who provide services related to a students’ social, emotional and life adjustment to school and/or society.  School Social Workers provide direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success. 

 

What Do School Social Workers Do?

 

SERVICES TO STUDENTS

  • Promotion of a school climate and culture conducive to student learning.
  • Individual and group counseling.
  • Crisis intervention.
  • Development and implementation of intervention strategies to increase academic success.
  • Social skill building.
  • Conflict resolution and mediation.
  • School wide presentations on relevant topics (anti-bullying, internet safety, drug prevention).

 

SERVICES TO PARENTS/FAMILIES

  • Partnering with parents to facilitate their children’s social, emotional, and academic success
  • Providing psychoeducation on the impact of mental health on student learning.
  • Assisting with access to programs and services for students with special needs.
  • Assisting with connection to and coordination of school and community resources.

 

 SERVICES TO SCHOOL PERSONNEL

  • Providing psychoeducation to staff on factors (social, cultural, economic, familial) which may affect student academic performance and behavior.
  • Assisting teachers with behavior management.
  • Providing direct support to staff.
